Primeval G322 Gender

Primeval g322 gender.

At the beginning of the clip the character Abbey steers away from the stereotypical image of women she is portrayed as a strong feisty women you see this when she is operating the mechanical machine. A wide shot is first used when she is seen doing this this establishes the scene and the location giving the audience a general idea of what the situation. A close up at the end of the digger portrays the fact that abbey (the female character) is experience in using the machine reinforcing the idea of her non-stereotypical portrayal. You are also given the impression that the character abbey is a tom boy and the mis-en-scene justifies this as she has short boyish hair and wears a leather jacket which makes you think of the characters from ‘Grease’ as they are mainly male and strong willed characters and stereotypical boys.
The female character Abbey fights the saber-tooth tiger at the beginning of the clip where she saves the man’s life which portrays her tenacity. This shot is portrayed through a continuity edit. There is a wide shot of her running after the man being chased reinstating this point again or reverse stereotypes as the man is stereotypically supposed to be strong and courageous but he is fact running away and being chased. This scene contrasts to the women (Abbey) running through the forest with a gun to him for the second time, the dark shape of the gun reinstates her power.
The man/gentlemen who is wearing a sky blue t-shirt is portrayed as more of an intelligent man for example when the saber-tooth attacks him we saw him cowering into a hole going against the stereotypes which contrasts him and Abbey making the reverse stereotypes more emphasised. Despite him cowering into a hole he displays courage, when he lures the creature away from Abbey but despite the brave act he is still running away and a continuity edit is used when he is running away and also when he uses the zip wire.  At this moment of time close ups are also used to portray the fear and exhaustion on his face and the idea that he is using his belt on the zip wire displays his intelligence. The Mis-en-scene of his clothes convey a more stereotypical view of a man as they are more neutral and earthy clothes and also have dirt on them and are strained.
The non-diegetic sound of the ambient sound track helps convey the tension and fear and helps make the pace of the action faster engaging the audience. The blurring and wipes between each edit gives the impression that it is too fast to see the saber-tooth. The music becomes a lot slower at some points but still has a high amount of tension.
The man who is wearing a pink attire is portrayed as a ‘pretty-boy’ (a lover and not a fighter). Stereotypically pink is more associated with girls yet he still wears this colour. When we see this character with the rest of the cast everyone is wearing mainly earthly colours or smart suits etc. whereas he wears a feminine colour again reversing the stereotypes. This character isn’t holding a gun but comically picks up a spade and is holding it the wrong way up. There is one man and one woman who both have guns portraying that the women is more reliable than the man wearing pink.

This extract turns a lot of ideas mostly of stereotypical views upside down- which therefore gives the reader an interesting watch.
